Silk vs Satin - What is the difference?

There is often a lot of confusion between silk and satin because they look very similar, but what exactly is the difference? Let's break it down for you...

Silk

Silk is a natural fibre made from the lava of silk worms, mulberry silk in particular is made from silk worms that feed only on mulberry leaves. It is a more luxurious fabric and of course more expensive because of it's high quality, and the time it takes to produce. The silk worms are fed mulberry leaves over the course of 6 weeks before they are ready to spin their silk!

It contains a natural protein called fibroin which helps with the hairs elasticity, adds shine and prevents breakage - amazing right!

Silk is a versatile fabric, delicate but very durable. Strong but breathable and temperature regulating (keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer), it’s also great for those with sensitive skin or allergies as it because of its organic non-irritating natural state.

Satin

Satin is actually a weave and can consist of natural or synthetic fibres, for example you can have satin material made from a weave of polyester, cotton, nylon, rayon and more. It is more inexpensive and easier to maintain than silk.

Satin has a glossy appearance similar to silk, but you will notice that it also has one dull side, which is a result of the weaving process.

Unlike silk, satin is not temperature regulating or hypoallergenic and it is a cheaper alternative.

Both satin and silk provide a smoother surface for you and your bubs hair allowing it to retain moisture but we love silk at Silk Bubs because of it's added benefits.
