Tips for Looking After your Newborn's Afro Hair

Your baby may have been born with a head full of hair or may have been born with sparse hair, either way starting a good hair routine early will give her the best start to strong healthy hair.

Shampooing

In our case a new born is considered to be 0 - 4 months and at this stage it’s best to use a non parfum, non sulphate, gentle or organic shampoo. There's no need to shampoo your baby's hair everyday as we wouldn’t want to strip her hair of it’s natural oils - once a week is fine!

After washing, use a clean t-shirt or microfibre towel to dry her hair, to prevent frizz and breakage.

Moisturising

The LO method works great for newborn's, (L - liquid & O - oil) which you can do every 1-2 days.

Here’s how it goes…

  1. Mist hair lightly with warm water, and work it into the hair - this is the first step to moisturising and hydrating her little curls.

  2. Follow up with an oil of your choice to lock in moisture, something like extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil, just like the water; you work the oil into the hair.

  3. Give your little one a lovely scalp massage, this will help to strengthen the roots of the hair and nourishes the hair-shafts, promoting new hair growth.

Bonus tips!

Only comb and detangle when her hair is moisturised or wet, and not dry. This will avoid breakage and pulling that can cause pain.

Protect hair when baby is sleeping with a Silk Bubs cot sleeve, it provides the perfect smooth surface that is frictionless and prevents pulling and tugging of little strands that can happen with conventional cotton sheets.

Make sure to switch positions to elevate pressure on particular areas, lie baby on alternate sides and give her lots of tummy time!

Avoid hair styling hair for as long as possible! Tight styles can cause breakage.
