5 Tips on How To Care For Your Silk

Updated: Sep 17, 2021

So you‘ve finally made the switch to silk, congratulations! Caring for your silk is easier than you think, here are some guidelines to help you enjoy your silk for years to come.

  1. Place in a laundry bag

Silk is a light and delicate material, placing it in a laundry bag first will prevent the fabric catching and pulling on the washing machine drum and causing tearing.

2. Use a gentle detergent

Whether you are hand washing or machine washing it's so important that you use a gentle detergent. Washing it with detergents that are too acidic or too alkaline will cause the natural protein present in silk to break down and for the fibres to harden, so a ph neutral detergent will maintain the silk fibres with every wash. Choose a detergent that is made especially for silk/wool, we love the Ecover Laundry Liquid, Delicate

3. Wash at a cold temperature

Any temperature higher than 30c will damage the natural fibres so it's best to wash at a cold temperature. Make sure you select the "delicate" cycle.

4. How to dry

Never wring out your silk, you can blot them with white towels instead. Hang your silk on a non slip line inside or outside but out of direct sunlight, sunlight can fade the colour of your silk. Avoid using a tumble dryer as heat can damage the fabric, but if it is absolutely necessary make sure you use the 'air' setting for 15 minutes or less.

5. Ironing your silk

Ironing is not always necessary, it's normal for your silk to wrinkle after washing but the threads magically straighten out after a few nights us. But if you insist, make sure you iron on the coolest setting available inside out.

Things to avoid..

Fabric softener - this can leave a residue on silk fibres that cause them to break down over time

Bleach

Dryer sheets

If you follow these simple guidelines we're sure your silk will last you years and years!
